Practicum Assessments

Practicum Assessments

A practicum is similar to an apprenticeship. The experience is the assessment.  A student participant is usually paired with an expert in the field or mentor teacher.  During a practicum experience there are expectations that are to be met by the participant. Observations are made daily by the experienced instructor regarding the participating practicum student.  The experienced instructor provides feedback to the practicum participant and to an academic advisor of the student.

 Strengths

Practicum participants receive valuable feedback from their mentor teacher. Participants are able to correct issues as they are indicated, and they are also provided with positive feedback from which to build on.

Weaknesses

The majority of the assessment depends upon the mentor teacher and his or her evaluation of the participant.

Role of Technology

Technology can be integrated into the observations by keeping a daily journal.  Forms that may be required can also be completed on-line.
